February 18-22, Hiding out from high winds at Rum Cay

Spent several days at Rum Cay, walked around the town, population 67, met a nice gentleman named “Ben” that took us on a trip all around the island on his golf cart showing us all the things and telling us stories of about the island. He’s hoping to re-open the marina on the southeast side of the island, and we wish him well. He’s one of the friendliest people we’ve met in our travels so far… With his warm personality he should do well in his new endeavor.
Here we are on the beach at Rum Cay, nice area, you can see the reefs in the backdrop…

We went snorkeling for several hours at a reef in the bay one day, saw lots of fish and even a shy sea turtle.

We were staying here waiting for the storm fronts to pass, so we had a little bit of cabin fever. We watched lots of movies, played lots of cards and went to the local church on Sunday.  There we met Ben’s wife, who officiated the service and was one of the deacons in the church.  That evening, we decided to dingy into the beach to play.

There was lots of big waves and our dinghy got pretty well swamped. It took us a about an hour to get the dinghy emptied and cleaned up… Here I am pumping out water from the dinghy, spent about 20 minutes doing this, and we’d already emptied a lot out before we returned to the boat!

Need to be more careful how we park the dinghy when going to the beach.
